Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) - Performance
(Domenico Scarlatti at 53, by Domingo Antonio Velasco)
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (October 26, 1685, Naples, Italy – July 23, 1757, Madrid, Spain) was the sixth of ten children and a younger brother to Pietro Filippo Scarlatti, also a musician. Most probably he first studied under his father, the composer and teacher Alessandro Scarlatti; other composers who may have been his early teachers include Gaetano Greco, Francesco Gasparini, and Bernardo Pasquini, all of whom seem to have influenced his musical style.
He became a composer and organist at the royal chapel in Naples in 1701. In 1704, he revised Carlo Francesco Pollarolo's opera Irene for performance at Naples. Soon after this his father sent him to Venice. In 1709 he went to Rome in the service of the exiled Polish queen Marie Casimire, where he met Thomas Roseingrave who later led the enthusiastic reception of the composer's sonatas in London. Scarlatti was already an eminent harpsichordist: there is a story that in a trial of skill with George Frideric Handel (his exact contemporary, 1685-1757) at the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome where he was judged possibly superior to Handel on that instrument, although inferior on the organ. Later in life, he was known to cross himself in veneration when speaking of Handel's skill.
Scarlatti composed several operas for Queen Casimira's private theatre. He was maestro di cappella at St Peter's from 1715 to 1719, and in the latter year came to London to direct his opera Narciso at the King's Theatre.
Domenico Scarlatti arrived in Lisbon on November 29, 1719, where he taught music to Princess Maria Magdalena Barbara. Leaving Lisbon on January 28, 1727 for Rome, he married Maria Caterina Gentili on May 6, 1728. In 1729 he moved to Sevilla, staying for four years and gaining a knowledge of flamenco[!].
In 1733 he went to Madrid as music master to his former student Princess Barbara, who had by then married into the Spanish royal house. When the Princess became Queen of Spain, Scarlatti remained in the country for 25, where he had five children.
Only a small fraction of Scarlatti's compositions were published during his lifetime; Scarlatti seems to have overseen the publication in 1738 of the most famous collection, his 30 Essercizi ("Exercises"). These were rapturously received throughout Europe, and were championed by Dr. Charles Burney.
Scarlatti's 555 keyboard sonatas are single movements, mostly binary, and are almost all intended for the harpsichord (there are four for organ, and a few where Scarlatti suggests a small instrumental group). Modern pianoforte technique owes much to their influence. Some of them display harmonic audacity, in their use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys.
Typical of his output is the Sonata in D Major, K. 96, found on The Unusual Classical Synthesizer (heard below without the repeats of each section).

Other distinctive attributes of Scarlatti's style include:
The influence of Iberian (Portuguese and Spanish) folk music, including use of the Phrygian mode and guitar-like figurations and dissonances.
A formal device in which each half of a sonata leads to a pivotal point, which Ralph Kirkpatrick termed "the crux", and which is sometimes underlined by a pause or fermata. Before the crux, Scarlatti sonatas often contain their main thematic variety, and after the crux the music makes more use of repetitive figurations as it modulates, in each half respectively, away from the home key and back.
After the death of his wife in 1742, Scarlatti married Anastasia Maxarti Ximenes.
The composer also befriended the castrato singer Farinelli (1705-1782), fellow Neapolitan who also enjoyed royal patronage in Madrid. Kirkpatrick acknowledges that Farinelli's correspondence provides "most of the direct information about Scarlatti that has transmitted itself to our day."
Scarlatti died at 71. His residence on Calle Leganitos is designated with an historical plaque, and his descendants still live in Madrid.
The many sonatas which were unpublished during Scarlatti's lifetime have appeared in print irregularly since his time. Scarlatti has attracted notable admirers, including Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Bela Bartók, Heinrich Schenker, and Vladimir Horowitz. Russian pianists have particularly championed Scarlatti's sonatas.
Scott Ross has recorded the complete Scarlatti sonatas in a 34-CD set, all on harpsichord, save three for organ (not four, as above) and the instrumental suites, for which he provided continuo. In 2007 the Dutch harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder finished his complete recording in sequential order for Brilliant Classics. Naxos Records is recording the same, in performances by various artists on the piano, as is Richard Lester, for Nimbus. Stradivarius's Scarlatti sonata project, mostly recorded with harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone, currently stands at volume 10.
Ralph Kirkpatrick, the harpsichordist-scholar, has become closely associated with the sonatas, and the numbering of the sonatas from his edition is nearly always used (the Kk. or K. number).
Pianist Vladimir Horowitz made several recordings of Scarlatti sonatas, performed on a modern piano. While these recordings have been the subject of critical debate and discussion (Horowitz was a pianist of the Romantic tradition), they caused a huge surge in popularity for Scarlatti's sonatas, which pianists had rarely played in public. Horowitz prepared meticulously for his Scarlatti recordings, calling on guidance from Ralph Kirkpatrick.
Other recordings of historical importance include those of some of the sonatas by Béla Bartók. Many critics (Jed Distler, Jens F. Laurson, and others) extol the virtues of a two-CD recording made by pianist Mikhail Pletnev (Virgin Classics).

Francesco Saverio Geminiani (December 5, 1687, Lucca, Italy - 17 September 1762) was a violinist, composer, and music theorist.
He received lessons in music from Alessandro Scarlatti, and studied the violin under Carlo Ambrogio Lonati in Milan and afterwards under Arcangelo Corelli. From 1711, he led the opera orchestra at Naples, as Leader of the Opera Orchestra and concertmaster, which gave him many opportunities for contact with Alessandro Scarlatti. In 1714, with the reputation of a virtuoso violinist, he arrived in London, where he was taken under the protection of William Capel, 3rd Earl of Essex, who remained a consistent patron. The next year, he played his violin concerti, with Handel at the keyboard, for the court of George I.
Geminiani made a living by teaching and writing music, and tried to keep pace with his passion for collecting by dealing in art, not always successfully. Many of his students went on to have successful careers such as Charles Avison, Matthew Dubourg, Michael Christian Festing, Bernhard Joachim Hagen, and Cecilia Young.
After visiting Paris and residing there for some time, he returned to England in 1755. In 1761, on one of his sojourns in Dublin, a servant robbed him of a musical manuscript on which he had bestowed much time and labour. His vexation at this loss is said to have hastened his death.
He appears to have been a first-rate violinist. His Italian pupils reportedly called him Il Furibondo, the Madman, because of his expressive rhythms. He is best known for three sets of concerti grossi, his Opus 2 (1732), Opus 3 (1733) and Opus 7 (1746), (there are 42 concerti in all) which introduce the viola as a member of the concertino group of soloists, making them essentially concerti for string quartet. These works are deeply contrapuntal to please a London audience still in love with Corelli, compared to the galant work that was fashionable on the Continent at the time of their composition. Geminiani also reworked a group of violin sonatas from his teacher Corelli into concerti grossi.
His Art of Playing the Violin (London, 1751) is the best-known summation of the 18th-century Italian method of violin playing, and is an invaluable source for study of late Baroque performance practice, giving detailed information on vibrato, trills, and other violin techniques.
The Guida harmonica (c.1752, add. 1756) is one of the most unusual harmony treatises of the late Baroque, serving as a sort of encyclopedia of basso continuo patterns and realizations. There are 2236 patterns in all, and at the end of each pattern is a page number reference for a potential next pattern; thus a student composer studying the book would have an idea of all the subsequent possibilities available after any given short bass line.
Geminiani published a number of solos for the violin, three sets of violin concerti, twelve violin trios, The Art of Accompaniment on the Harpsichord, Organ, etc. (1754), Lessons for the Harpsichord, Art of Playing the Guitar (1760) and some other works.

Johann Joachim Quantz (January 30, 1697, Oberscheden, Göttingen, Germany - July 12, 1773, Potsdam) was a flautist, flute maker, and composer.
He began his musical studies as a child with his uncle (his blacksmith father died when Quantz was young. At his deathbed, the father begged his son to follow in his footsteps), later going to Dresden and Vienna. It was during his time as musician to Frederick Augustus II of Poland that Quantz began to concentrate on the flute, performing more and more on the instrument. He gradually became known as the finest flautist in Europe, touring France and England, and becaming flute teacher, flute maker, and composer to Frederick II ("The Great") of Prussia in 1740. Quantz was an innovator in flute design, adding keys to the instrument to help with intonation, for example.
Although he wrote many pieces of music, mainly for the flute (including around 300 flute concertos), he is best known today as the author of Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (1752), a treatise on flute playing. It is of great interest today as a source of information on performance practice and flute technique in the 18th Century.
The works list was established by Horst Augsbach. QV stands for "Quantz Verzeichnis," and Anh. for Anhang (supplement) when the authenticity of the works is spurious.
The numbering follows the catalogue Catalogue des solos pour Sans Souci started in 1763 and continued in 1769 by the Catalogue des solos pour le Nouveau Palais that contains works of both Quantz and his student Frederick II, King of Prussia. These two catalogues start at number 88. The previous catalogue Catalogue des solos pour Potsdam containing sonatas Nos. 1-87 was lost. The sonatas by Quantz are numbered as follows: 88-105, 142, 219-361. The sonatas by Frederick II are: 106-141, 143-218. The sonatas with a Roman numeral numbering are part of the collection Sonata a flauto traverso solo e cembalo da Gio: Gioacchino Quantz.
